Thomas Holland 1802-1853 and Mary (Bywaters) 1793-1849.
Thomas Holland was the elder son of John Holland and Sarah and was baptised in Culmington on the 31st January 1802. I assume he was born earlier the same month, some three months after John and Sarah were married. In June 1824 he married Mary Bywaters in Culmington. The entry in the register says that Thomas is from the parish of Stanton Lacy and Mary from Culmington, but I suspect it was in fact the other way round. Mary Bywaters was baptised in Stanton Lacy in October 1793 and her brother James was baptised there some five years later. There is no indication of where her parents originated, but they don’t appear in Stanton Lacy before 1793. Since Thomas, Mary and the two witnesses all made their marks instead of signing, they were probably illiterate and would not have realised that there was an error in the record.
Thomas and Mary remained in Culmington until around 1835 and then moved north to Dinchope in the adjacent parish of Halford, where they appeared in the 1841 census. The eldest daughter, Mary (aged 16) was in service at Priors Hatton nearby, but the other six children were all present.

In September 1849, Mary wife of Thomas Holland died at the age of 54. After this, the family seem to have scattered – in the 1851 census Thomas and his daughter Martha (now 15) were still at Dinchope but the others were missing. His daughter Elizabeth, now 21, was a “house servant” at the Cottage in Onibury. The others have yet to be found. In March 1853, Thomas himself died, reputedly of a “diseased heart” and the death was reported by his son George.
In 1851, the eldest daughter, Mary aged 26 may have married, this has not been checked. Ann Holland, aged 23, was still unmarried in 1859 when she was a witness at her brother's wedding and she has not been found. The next daughter, Elizabeth, aged 21, was at Onibury. The later history of the four daughters, Mary, Anne, Elizabeth and Martha has yet to be traced. Their eldest son William was missing from the censuses from 1851 to 1871, but appeared in Wroxeter in 1881. More information about him is still needed.
