Thomas Holland 1703-after 1743.

He was the only surviving son of Thomas Holland the glovemaker and his wife Ann. In July 1732, when he was 29, he married Hannah Mason in Onibury. Four children were baptised in Onibury over the next ten years. His wife Hannah was buried in Onibury in November 1778, but it is not certain when Thomas died. There was one burial of Thomas Holland in Onibury in July 1793, when Thomas would have been 90 and his son Thomas would have been 58. The burial could have referred to either of them, and the other burial is missing. In the tree below, this has been attributed to the son, but it could refer to either.

His eldest son, John, was baptised in June 1733. John’s marriage to Jane has not been found, but it probably occurred around 1770. The first record in Onibury was the baptism, in September 1771, of their son William and their daughter Mary was baptised there in February 1775 and buried the following April. John Holland was buried in Onibury in April 1788, at the age of 55 and Jane Holland “of Onibury” was buried there in February 1814 at the age of 84. Although William was only 17 when his father died, he and his mother seem to have coped with the situation.

The next son, another Thomas, was baptised in February 1735. By April 1770, when he was 35, he was living in Wistanstow and banns were called there for his marriage in May 1770 to Ann Stead in Ludlow. After the marriage, they returned to Onibury and three children, Thomas, Betty and George, were baptised there between 1773 and 1783. He may have been the Thomas Holland buried in Onibury in July 1793 (when he was 58). If so, his eldest son Thomas was 20 and his youngest George only 10 when their father died. His wife Ann, described as “Ann Holland of Flaxford” was buried in May 1817 at the age of 76. This implies that she was born in 1741 and so was 29 when they married and 42 when George was born. The family seem to have moved to Flaxford around 1813 – their eldest son Thomas was described as “of Flaxford” when he was buried in June 1818 at the age of 45. Their daughter Betty was probably the “Elizabeth Holland of Leintwardine” who was buried in Onibury in November 1838 at the age of 64.

The problem with this family is the entry in January 1778 of the baptism of “John son of John Holland and Ann”. He was almost certainly a grandson of Thomas Holland senior and Hannah (Mason), but were his parents John and Jane or Thomas and Ann? This remains a mystery. John moved to Culmington before September 1801 when he married Sarah Evans and raised a family there.

William Holland, son of Thomas Holland senior and Hannah (Mason), was baptised in Onibury in April 1739, but nothing more is known about him. His sister Mary was baptised in April 1743 and buried in October 1785, when she was 42.
