John Holland 1809–1865 and Elizabeth (Didlock) c1795-?
John Holland was the younger son of John
Holland and Sarah. He was baptised at Culmington on 17th September
1809 and I assume he was born earlier that summer. On 6th May 1831,
he married Elizabeth Didlock in Leintwardine. (I have this from the
IGI) They then returned to Culmington and he was described as "labourer,
of Vernols Common in Culmington" when their children were baptised in
1834, 1837, 1838 and 1840.
In the 1841 census, they were living at Binley in Culmington and had an older daughter, Elizabeth, born in 1832. They were also accompanied by Sarah Didluck, aged 15, who may have been a relative of Elizabeth’s. In the 1845 tithe map of Culmington, John Holland had a house and garden in Vernolds Common, owned by the Earl of Craven. His mother Sarah rented a house nearby, with two small plots of land, one surrounding the house and the other on the opposite side of the road.

In the 1851 census, John and his wife Elizabeth and their other four children were still living somewhere in Culmington. In the 1861 census, they were living at Vernols Common in Burley. Their son John Holland was still unmarried and living at home, now aged 27. So was their daughter Fanny, aged 20, and her illegitimate son William, who had been baptised in Culmington. They also appeared to have another daughter, Jane, aged 9, whose baptism does not appear in the Culmington records. John's wife, Elizabeth, would have been in her mid fifties when Jane was born.
On 5th September 1865, John Holland of Vernolds Common was buried at Culmington. In the 1871 census, his widow Elizabeth was still living at Vernolds Common, Burley and was accompanied by her son John Holland (now described as a widower), her daughter Jane Holland and her granddaughter Anne Holland (aged 6 months). This family was no longer in Culmington in the 1881 census.
In March 2005, Les Harlock from Coventry contacted me with
more information about this family. On 21st June 1858, Hannah Holland
married William Higgins from Lower Hayton in Culmington. He had been
born on 20th August 1837 and so was a little younger than Hannah. He died on 10th
December 1874 of pleuro-pneumnia. The 1871 census showed them living at Stokeswood
Cottage, Stokesay and both Hannah and William were working as farm labourers. They
had four children, namely: George aged 11, Eliza aged 9, William aged 5 and John aged 3.
(John had been born on 26th October 1867.)
John subsequently married Emma Louisa Brookes from Hereford on 11 May 1890 in Ludlow. One of
their children was Albert Edward (born 24th June 1902) who was Les' maternal grandfather.
