John Holland 1777-1835 and Sarah (Evans) c1775-1854.

This Holland family appeared in Culmington in 1801 when John Holland married Sarah Evans and settled in Vernals Common in the parish of Culmington. John was said to be the son of John Holland and Anne, and grandson of Thomas Holland, who was baptised in Onibury on 1st January 1778. This implies that he was born some time in December 1777, which agrees with the age given in his burial record.

Three children were baptised in Culmington, as shown below. It is possible that the baptism in July 1806 of “Mary d.of John and Sarah Holland” also belongs to this family, but there is no further mention of Mary in the records so far searched and so she has not been included. Later records refer to “Hannah Holland” born around 1816 and she is assumed to be the same person as “Sarah” although it is uncertain whether she was or should have been baptised “Hannah” or merely changed her name to avoid confusion with her mother (or her daughter).

Their elder son, Thomas Holland, married Mary Bywaters in Culmington in 1824 and lived there until about 1835, when he moved to Halford in Stokesay. Their younger son, John Holland, married Elizabeth Didlock in Leintwardine in 1831 and they settled in Binley or Vernols Common in Culmington for the rest of his life. In April 1835, John Holland of Vernals Common, aged 58, was buried at Culmington.

In June 1837, Sarah daughter of Hannah Holland of Vernols Common was baptised in Culmington. There was no indication of her father’s identity, but in December 1840, Hannah married Thomas Didluck in Much Wenlock. If Thomas and Elizabeth Didlock were brother and sister, then Elizabeth’s marriage to John Holland might explain how Thomas and Hannah came to meet.

In the 1841 census, Sarah Holland, a widow aged 54, was living at Vernols Common and accompanied by Thomas Didluck (aged 35-39), Hannah Didluck (aged 25-29), Sarah Holland (aged 4) and John Didluck (aged 3, should be 3 months). So it appears that Hannah continued to live with her mother after her marriage to Thomas Didluck. In the 1845 tithe map of Culmington, Sarah Holland had a house and two small gardens by the cross roads between Vernolds Common and Burley, properties owned by the Earl of Craven.

The 1851 census gave a little more information about the family. Sarah Holland, widow, who was the head of the household, was an "agricultural labourer", aged 67 and born in Culmington. Her son-in-law, Thomas Didluck, was also an agricultural labourer, aged 44 and born in Leintwardine. Her daughter Hannah Didluck was aged 34 and born in Culmington while their son John Didluck was aged 10 and born in Culmington. On this occasion, William Price, a lawyer aged 23 and born in Onibury was staying with them as a visitor.

After her husband’s death in 1835, Sarah Holland appeared as head of the household and her daughter Hannah and son-in-law Thomas Didluck lived with her. In August 1849, Hannah daughter of Thomas Didluck and Hannah was baptised in Culmington. Neither of Hannah's two daughters, (Sarah aged 14 and Hannah aged 2) appeared in the 1851 census entry.

Some time between 1851 and 1854, the whole family appear to have moved to Corve Street, Ludlow. Certainly Hannah was living in Corve Street in 1854 when she reported her mother's death and since she "made her mark" rather than signing the certificate, this suggests she was more or less illiterate. In January 1854 when Sarah died, she was living in Corve Street, Ludlow. On her death certificate, Sarah was described as the widow of John Holland, labourer and the cause of death was given as "diseased lungs and dropsy".

In the 1861 census, Hannah was described as a widow, so Thomas Didluck must have died before 1861. Sarah had reappeared and John was still there and there was now a younger son Evan, born in Ludlow in 1855. William Price, the lawyer, was still lodging with the family, but he had aged 18 years in the ten years between the two censuses. The younger daughter, Hannah, was still missing and may have died young.
