John Holland 1589-1655.

John Holland, the eldest surviving son of Charles Holland of Leintwardine, was baptised in Onibury in January 1589 and was presumably born a few days earlier. By June 1626, when he was 37, he was living in Woottons Wood in the outskirts of Onibury, and he married Elizabeth Baylie from Clee St Margaret. Over the next ten years, they had five children baptised in Onibury and presumably remained at Woottons Wood. The youngest son, William, was baptised in March 1637, shortly before the start of the Civil War in 1642.

Their eldest son, Thomas, was 15 when war broke out whilst John himself was 53, so it is unlikely that they would have been involved in the fighting. However Onibury is close to Ludlow and times would have been hard with the fighting nearby and increased taxation by both armies. His wife Elizabeth was buried in November 1647 and John himself was buried in April 1655, at the age of 66. The marriages of his two elder sons probably occurred during the Commonwealth and so were not recorded in the parish registers. There is no indication of any grandchildren from either of these marriages. His eldest son, Thomas, was 28 when John died in 1655 and William, his youngest son was 18 so they would have been old enough to fend for themselves. There is no indication of how they made a living, but if they had a family smallholding, it would have been difficult to support three or four families (Their sister Katherine may also have married).

Thomas Holland of Woottons Wood was buried in July 1679, when he was 52 and his brother, Richard Holland later the same month when he was 51. In September 1692, Margaret Holland, widow, was buried and in April 1695, Isabel Holland, widow, was also buried. They were probably wives to Thomas and Richard, but there is no way of telling which of the two was married to which brother.
